CAP Class of 2020 Visits Safeboda

What does it take to run and grow a successful start-up business in Africa, and particularly, Uganda, today?

A crucial part of the CEO Apprenticeship Programme (CAP)is interacting with real businesses successfully navigating and growing in today’s business environment.

This year, the CAP 2020 cohort was hosted by the fast growing ride hailing start-up, SafeBoda. Here, they interacted with co-founders Ricky Rapa Thompson and Maxime Dieudonne who emphasized the importance of innovation, risk taking, data analytics and passionate employees as important factors for SafeBoda’s success.

“Innovation rarely comes from status quo. If you want to change things, you really need to take some risks. Be obsessed about small things but do not micromanage, there is difference. In addition, Safeboda is unique in that we have proximity with the product that we are building. All our staff are SafeBoda super users and we are able to get amazing feedback for example, our pair feature was an innovation of one of our Engineering staff,” said SafeBoda co-founder Maxime Dieudonne.

“KPIs and Metrics are important in using data analytics – Data needs to be structured around building a competent BI team that’s technically competent but also teams that add value and understand trends and what these mean for the business.”- SafeBoda COO, Deepa Shekar, added.

Catherine Tulina Kafumbe, Head of Support, also emphasized,

“The secret in service excellence is in the hiring of passionate individuals and in being committed to building an engaged team.”
